About

Any secondary packaging strategy won’t be successful if you are not using the right packaging tape. If you want to ensure your goods arriving at destinations safely and securely, you will have to pay attention to using packing tape just as you would do with other cushioning supplies.

Selecting the right packing tape is crucial because you do not want it to lose hold of the surface during storage and shipping. For this purpose, you will need to consider a few factors.

Substrate

It is necessary to pay attention to the surface of the carton and how packing tape will adhere to it.

The types of corrugated cartons include thick, recycled, double-wall, and painted or waxed variants.

If you are using recycled cartons, you may need to use specialized tape with an enhanced ability to adhere to any surface. That is because recycled cartons consist of chopped-up and repulped fibers that make the surface less porous.

If you are using thick or double-wall cartons, you will have to use tape that is resistant to slippage. Such tape has an amazing ability to hold the flaps down. Securing these flaps is necessary because they usually come under a lot of stress.

If you are using printed or waxed cartons, you will need to be particularly careful while choosing a packing tape. The substrate of these boxes usually has lower surface energy. Because of the lower molecular force of attraction, these surfaces do not usually allow most packing tapes to establish a bond. Acrylic tapes are most suitable for such cartons.

Environment

Environmental conditions can change the way packing tapes work. That is why you have to make sure that the tape you use can endure any temperature change or exposure to moisture without losing its function. You do not want to use standard packing tape if your packages have to travel through a route with extreme hot or cold temperatures. Cold temperatures cause liquid components of the adhesive to become solid. The tape becomes less thick as a result. Heat, on the other hand, causes the tape to melt.

Humidity can also be an issue for packing tape. If you are sending packages through hot and humid environments, you will need to use acrylic tape, which also works well in dusty environments.

Tape grade

You can choose from different film thicknesses and adhesive levels while purchasing packing tape. If you want to choose a packing tape with the right tensile strength and holding power, make sure to take the right measurements of your packaging. Information about the case size and weight can help you select the right tape-grade.

Tape quality

Last but not the least, tape quality is one of the most crucial factors to consider. You have to make sure that your packing tape is ready to maintain its hold during rigorous conditions. With the help of strong tape and a high-quality seal, your package won’t get open during transit. A high-quality tape is tested for several factors. It means that the one you get is essentially approved for better endurance and adhesion.
